Sejak 1965 hingga 1970 Kepala Negara di bawah Undang-Undang Kemerdekaan Gambia 1964 adalah Ratu Gambia, Elizabeth II, yang juga merupakan Penguasa Britania Raya dan seluruh persemakmurannya. Ratu diwakilkan di Gambia oleh seorang Gubernur-Jenderal. Gambia menjadi republik pada tahun 1970 dan Penguasa serta Gubernur-Jenderal digantikan oleh seorang Presiden eksekutif.

Gubernur-Jenderal

 

Gubernur-Jenderal merupakan perwakilan Penguasa di Gambia dan melaksanakan sebagian besar kekuasaan monarki. Gubernur Jenderal ditunjuk untuk jangka waktu yang tidak terbatas, bertugas atas persetujuan Penguasa. Setelah disahkannya Statuta Westminster 1931, Gubernur Jenderal diangkat hanya mengandalkan saran dari Kabinet Gambia tanpa keterlibatan pemerintah Britania Raya. Apabila terdapat masa lowong, Hakim Agung bertindak sebagai Pejabat Penyelenggara Pemerintahan.

He was also a member of the House of Representatives from 1960 to 1972, and de facto Leader of the Opposition for a period, opposite Dawda Jawara.
