Kereta api Turangga adalah kereta api kelas Eksekutif Satwa yang dioperasikan PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) di Pulau Jawa dengan jurusan Bandung (BD) - Surabaya Gubeng (SGU) dan sebaliknya.

Operasional

KA Turangga pertama kali beroperasi pada tanggal 02 September 1995. Perjalanan sejauh 699 km ditempuh dalam waktu kurang lebih 12 jam dan hanya berhenti di Stasiun Cipeundeuy, Tasikmalaya, Banjar, Kroya, Wonosari,Kutoarjo, Yogyakarta, Solo Balapan, Madiun, Nganjuk, Jombang, dan Mojokerto.

Pada awal pengoperasiannya, kereta ini diluncurkan dengan kelas Bisnis dan Eksekutif. Namun, sejak 11 Oktober 1999 semua rangkaiannya diubah menjadi kelas Eksekutif Satwa, seiring dengan datangnya rangkaian baru (K1-995xx, nomor baru K1 0 99 XX). Kelas bisnis untuk jalur ini pun dialihkan ke KA Mutiara Selatan, dan rangkaian bisnis Turangga dipakai oleh KA Gajayana yang baru beroperasi.

Kereta api dengan desain layanan kelas Eksekutif Satwa ini menawarkan alternatif perjalanan Bandung-Surabaya dan sebaliknya pada malam hari, oleh karena itu pada pengumuman nama kereta di stasiun pemberhentian, kereta dengan nomor perjalanan 47 dan 48 ini sering ditambahkan istilah 'Ekspres Malam'. Kereta Api Ekspres Malam Turangga berangkat dari Stasiun Bandung (BD) pada pukul 19.00 WIB dan dari Stasiun Surabaya Gubeng (SGU) pada pukul 18.10 WIB. Rangkaian KA Turangga terdiri dari 6-8 kereta penumpang kelas Eksekutif, ada yang memiliki kaca (seperti) pesawat dan yang memiliki kaca lebar (K1), 1 kereta makan (KM1), 1 gerbong pembangkit (P), dan 1 gerbong bagasi (B).

Sejak tanggal 19 Januari 2009, rangkaian kereta api Turangga diganti dengan rangkaian kereta (seperti) pesawat yang memiliki interior hijau. Meskipun kereta retrofit, kereta retrofit ini banyak yang buatan tahun 60-an, tidak seperti rangkaian KA Turangga asli yang dibuat tahun 1999 di INKA. Namun, dewasa ini, KA Ekspres Malam Turangga tidak sepenuhnya lagi menggunakan kereta (seperti) pesawat. Satu rangkaian kereta retrofit tersebut kini dibawa rangkaian Kereta api Sancaka relasi Surabaya Gubeng-Yogyakarta.

Tetapi, saat ini, kereta Turangga terkenal dengan kereta retrofitnya yang tidak nyaman lagi, mengingat kursi kulit di KA retrofit kurang begitu nyaman, keras, dan licin, apalagi kereta ini adalah kereta yang berjalan malam dan penumpang akan tidur di kereta. Siangnya, rangkaian kereta ini yang berada di Bandung akan digunakan sebagai KA Argo Parahyangan Tambahan. Sekarang KA Turangga tidak lagi menggunakan KA retrofit, kini menggunakan rangkaiannya yang lama buatan 1999 dan eks-Gajayana buatan 2001, serta tidak jarang bertukar rangkaian dengan Kereta api Bangunkarta (Surabaya Gubeng-Gambir via Semarang).

Asal usul nama

Nama Turangga diambil dari nama lain kuda tunggangan para raja/bangsawan di Jawa yang melambangkan kendaraan yang bisa melaju dengan kencang dalam berbagai keadaan.
