Pada 30 Mei 2014, President Obama mengumumkan bahwa Earnest akan menggantikan Jay Carney sebagai Sekretaris Press Gedung Putih.[2]
Early years
Earnest lahir di Kansas City, Missouri, putra dari Jeanne M., seorang psikologis, dan Donald H. Earnest, seorang direktur atlet. Dia lulusan The Barstow School, sebuah sekolah swasta jenjang pendidikan pertama, melalui beasiswa. Dia juga gemar bermain baseball dan basketball.
Earnest lulus dari Rice University pada 1997 dengan gelar pendidikan kebijakan dan ilmu politik.[3]
Karir
Setelah lulus kuliah, ia bekerja dalam Pemilihan Walikota Houston 1997 untuk Lee Brown.[4] Earnest bertindak sebagai pembantu konggres untuk ketua konggres Amerika Serikat Marion Berry dari 2002-2003 setelah kerja kampanye pertama bersama Michael Bloomberg untuk walikota New York. After working on Capitol Hill, Earnest worked for the Democratic National Committee from 2003-2006 under both Chairman Terry McAuliffe and Chairman Howard Dean. Earnest was Communications Director on Jim Davis' campaign for Governor of Florida in 2006. Earnest moved to Iowa in December 2006 to serve as National Communications Director for then-Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack's presidential campaign. He then joined Senator Obama's presidential campaign in March 2007 as Obama's Iowa Communications Director. After Obama's Iowa caucus victory, Earnest worked as a top communications aide in several primary contests including South Carolina, Texas and Pennsylvania. During the 2008 general election, Earnest served as the campaign's Deputy Communication Director. After Obama was elected President, Earnest moved to Washington, DC and served as the Communications Director for the Presidential Inaugural Committee. Earnest started at the White House on President Obama's first full day in office, January 21, 2009 as Deputy Press Secretary under Robert Gibbs. Later, Earnest was promoted and served as Principal Deputy White House Press Secretary and Chief of Staff to Jay Carney, occasionally filling in during press briefings. Earnest is the voice of West Wing Week, an online video series produced by the White House that chronicles the President's activities each week.
Earnest dianggap sebagai pembela getol untuk Presiden Obama tetapi juga sebagai orang yang akan menyuarakan akses pers dan kelancaran lebih untuk informasi. Dia dihormati dan sangat disukai oleh koleganya seperti jurnalis dan Gedung Putih.[5] Dalam survei tahunan yang dilakukan oleh Politico Magazine pada April 2015, ia terpilih sebagai pejabat pers yang paling membantu dalam pemerintahan Obama dan sekretaris pers Gedung Putih terbaik oleh hamper 70 jurnalis.[6]
Kehidupan Pribadi
Earnest menikahi Natalie Wyeth, seorang cicit dari mendiang ilustrator N. C. Wyeth, dan seorang mantan pejabat veteran Jawatan Kelola Keuangan.[1] Mereka memiliki putra yang bernama Walker yang lahir pada 2014.[7] Earnest penggemar setia tim baseball Kansas City Royals dan selalu menngunakan cangkir Ningrat dalam setiap pertemuan pers sejak Hari Pembukaan baseball 2015.[8]
