Rencana film ini pertama kali diungkapkan tahun 2004. Awalnya film ini berlatar tahun 1920-an dan berkisah tentang pemeran lakon Romawi kuno. Coen bersaudara menangguhkan ide ini sampai akhir 2013. Pengambilan gambar utama dimulai bulan November 2014 di Los Angeles, California. Film ini tayang perdana di Los Angeles tanggal 1 Februari 2016 dan dirilis di Amerika Serikat tanggal 5 Februari 2016.
Hail, Caesar! meraup $63 juta di seluruh dunia dan mendapat tanggapan positif dari berbagai kritikus, tetapi penonton kurang tertarik.
