Clifford Geertz

Clifford James Geertz (San Francisco, 23 Agustus 1926–Philadelphia, 30 Oktober 2006) adalah seorang ahli antropologi asal Amerika Serikat. Ia paling dikenal melalui penelitian-penelitiannya mengenai Indonesia dan Maroko dalam bidang seperti agama (khususnya Islam), perkembangan ekonomi, struktur politik tradisional, serta kehidupan desa dan keluarga. Terkait kebudayaan Jawa, ia memopulerkan istilah priyayi saat melakukan penelitian tentang masyarakat Jawa pada tahun 1960-an, dan mengelompokkan masyarakat Jawa ke dalam tiga golongan: priyayi, santri dan abangan.

Sejak tahun 1970 hingga meninggal dunia Geertz menjabat sebagai profesor emeritus di Fakultas Ilmu Sosial di Institute for Advanced Study. Ia juga pernah menjabat sebagai profesor tamu di Departemen Sejarah Universitas Princeton dari 1975 hingga 2000.
