Diluncurkan pada tahun 1912, HMS Warspite, yang dikenal sebagai "The Grand Old Lady", adalah kapal tempur paling sangat dihiasi dalam sejarah Angkatan Laut, dengan karir panjang dan terhormat. Dia adalah peserta utama dalam Pertempuran Jutland, pertempuran laut terbesar dari Perang Dunia 1, dan juga berpartisipasi di seluruh pertempuran di Laut Mediterania, Samudera Atlantik dan Samudra India selama Perang Dunia 2, termasuk memberikan dukungan artileri untuk Pendaratan Normandia.

Konstruksi

Warspite, merupakan kapal ke-enam Royal Navy yang memiliki nama sama persis. Ia mulai dibangun pada 21 Oktober 1912 do Devonport Royal Dockyard, diuji coba pada 26 November 1913, dan selesai dibangun pada April 1915 dibawah komando Kapten Edward Phillpotts. Warspite dimasukkan ke dalam Skuadron tempur ke-2 dari Grand Fleet yang melewati sejumlah tes penerimaan, seperti tes menembak, dimana Churchill hadir ketika Ia menembakkan meriam 15 inch (381 mm)-nya. Churchill pun terkesima dengan akurasi dan kekuatannya. Di penghujung 1915, Warspite sempat terjebak di Sungai Forth dan menyebabkan lambungnya sedikit rusak. Dia terjebak karena mengikuti para kapal perusak yang mengawalnya pergi sungai-sungai berukuran kecil. Setelah diperbaiki selama dua bulan di Rosyth dan Jarrow, dia kembali bergabung dengan Grand Fleet, kali ini sebagai bagian dari Skuadron tempur ke-5 yang baru dibuat demi para kapal-kapal dari kelas Queen Elizabeth. Pada awal Desember, Warspite terlibat dalam insiden lainnya ketika sedang latihan, dia bertabrakan dengan saudarinya Barham, yang menyebabkan kerusakan sedang pada haluan Warspite. Dia berhasil kembali ke Arus Scapa dan menuju Devonport untuk diperbaiki lebih lanjut. Ia bergabung kembali di armada pada malam natal 1915.
