Barcelona
Barcelona adalah sebuah kota di Spanyol dan merupakan ibukota wilayah otonom Katalonia. Berdiri pada 230 SM, kota ini berperan sebagai galeri hidup dari arsitektur dan dekorasi bergaya modernis dan Art Nouveau (Seni Baru). Kuil-kuil dan bangunan karya arsitek Antoni Gaudí, gereja abad pertengahan, sisa tembok Romawi dan plaza serta tempat orang berjalan-jalan-semuanya terkesan istimewa. Disebut "Parisnya Spanyol" oleh Hans Christian Andersen atas kecantikan dan warisan budayanya yang kaya, Barcelona mendapatkan lagi kejayaannya lewat status otonomi terbaru serta diterimanya budaya Katalonia dalam kerajaan Spanyol.
Jumlah penduduknya di wilayah pusat kota adalah 1.583.000 jiwa (2003). Bersama dengan wilayah di sekitar sisi kota, Penduduknya berjumlah 4.042.000 jiwa (2000). Penduduk di wilayah metropolitan (kota dan kota-kota satelit) adalah 4.667.000 (2003). Luas wilayahnya adalah 100,4 km² dan kepadatannya adalah 15.764/km² (2001).
Geografi
Menghadap Laut Tengah arah tenggara, namun dikatakan seakan 'melarikan diri dari laut' karena arsitekturnya tak terpusat pada pelabuhan terkemukanya. Dataran rendah kota ini dibatasi Rio Besos, Rio Llobregal dan pegunungan yang setengah mengelilinginya.

Sejarah
Sejak permulaannya sebagai pelabuhan dagang orang Funisia dan Kartagena, Barcelona berkembang menjadi pusat keagamaan selama pendudukan Visigoth antara abad ke-5 sampai abad ke-6. Barcelona kehilangan kekuatannya saat Napoli menjadi ibukota kerajaan Katalan-Aragon pada tahun 1442, dan jatuh lagi bersama kebangkitan Turki Utsmani di Mediterania. Pangeran Karl III dari Austria diizinkan mendirikan pengadilan di Barcelona pada tahun 1705, setelah Perang Suksesi Spanyol mendudukkannya ke atas singgasana Spanyol. Barcelona pun makmur bersamaan dengan perkembangan industri katun setelah Felipe V dari Spanyol merebutnya pada tahun 1714.
Setelah Kematian Hitam (penyakit menular) mewabah di abad ke-14 dan 15, pemerintahan represif Felipe V dan penerusnya kaisar Napoleon Bonaparte di abad ke-19, kota ini harus menangani pergulatan internal di abad ke-20. Saat Perang Saudara Spanyol pecah pada tahun 1936, Republik Katalan menyerah pada Spanyol.
Sejak tahun 1970-an, saat bahasa dan budaya Katalan secara resmi diakui Spanyol, Barcelona telah mendapatkan posisi penting di dunia internasional. Pada tahun 1980, sebuah pemerintahan otonomi dibentuk di Katalonia. Pada tahun 1992, Olimpiade, dan pesonanya, serta keramahan penduduknya yang hampir berjumlah 2 juta jiwa, berhasil merebut perhatian dunia.
