Tumbuhan ini sebagian besar berupa pohon dioecious atau perdu. [9] Empat spesies ( A. hermaphrodita, A. heterodoxa, A. brevicaudata, dan A. egreria ) secara konsisten memiliki bunga biseksual, meskipun secara fungsional mereka mungkin dioecious. [10] Bijinya mempunyai arils berwarna cerah yang menarik bagi burung, yang menyebarkan bijinya. [11]
