Bahasa di Kanada
Kanada sebagai negara tujuan imigrasi didunia memiliki bahasa dan budaya yang beragam. Menurut laporan sensus penduduk nasional Kanada bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Prancis adalah bahasa yang paling banyak digunakan di Kanada,[4] dimana 56,9% penduduk Kanada menuturkan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa ibu dan 21,3% penduduk Kanada menggunakan bahasa Prancis sebagai bahasa ibu.[5] Kanada mengakui bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Prancis sebagai bahasa resmi. Bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Prancis ditetapkan sebagai bahasa resmi di Kanada melalui Akta Bahasa Resmi (bahasa Inggris: Official Language Act, bahasa Prancis: Loi sur les langues officielles yang ditandatangani pada tahun 1969.[6]
Penggunaan bahasa Inggris dan Prancis
suntingBahasa Prancis merupakan bahasa paling dominan di provinsi Quebec dengan persentase sebesar 79,95% dari keseluruhan penduduk Quebec berbicara dalam bahasa Prancis dirumah.[7] Dari total 13 provinsi dan daerah teritori di Kanada, bahasa Inggris ditetapkan sebagai bahasa resmi di tujuh provinsi dan lima provinsi lain mengakui bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa resmi secara de facto.[4] Bahasa Prancis menjadi bahasa resmi di lima provinsi di Kanada. Provinsi Nunavut dan Teritori Barat Laut Kanada mengakui bahasa-bahasa asli penduduk lingkar artik sebagai bahasa resmi.[8][9]
Lagu kebangsaan Kanada O Canada dapat dinyanyikan dalam dua bahasa, baik itu bahasa Inggris ataupun bahasa Prancis.[10] Salah satu proses yang harus dipenuhi bila ingin menjadi warga negara Kanada adalah harus dapat menyanyikan lagu O Canada dalam dua bahasa tersebut.[11]
Bahasa penduduk asli Kanada
suntingSelain bahasa-bahasa para pendatang di Kanada bahasa asli penduduk Kanada masih dapat dijumpai terutama di wilayah lingkar artik Kanada. Persentase keseluruhan penutur bahasa asli Kanada hanya mencapai 0,6% dari total populasi penduduk Kanada atau berjumlah sekitar 200.725 orang.[12]
