The Concert for Bangladesh
The Concert for Bangladesh (atau Bangla Desh, seperti nama negara yang awalnya dieja)[1] adalah sebuah konser amal yang diselenggarakan oleh mantan gitaris Beatles, George Harrison bersama pemain sitar asal India, Ravi Shankar. Pertunjukan diadakan pada pukul 14:30 dan 8:00 malam pada hari Minggu, 1 Agustus 1971, di Madison Square Garden di New York City, untuk meningkatkan kesadaran internasional, dan mendanai bantuan bagi para pengungsi dari Pakistan Timur, setelah perang kemerdekaan dan dikaitkan pada genosida yang terjadi. Konser tersebut diikuti oleh album live terlaris, satu set berisi tiga album, dan dokumenter konser Apple Films, yang dibuka di bioskop pada musim semi 1972.

Acara ini merupakan konser amal terbesar pada saat itu,[2] dan turut menampilkan supergroup yang terdiri dari Harrison, sesama mantan Beatle Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell dan Badfinger. Selain itu, Shankar dan Ali Akbar Khan – keduanya memiliki akar leluhur di Bangladesh – menampilkan set pembuka musik klasik India. Konser tersebut dihadiri oleh total 40.000 orang, dan penerimaan gerbang awal mengumpulkan hampir $250.000 untuk bantuan Bangladesh, yang dikelola oleh UNICEF.
Setelah mengumpulkan para musisi dengan mudah, Harrison merasa sangat sulit untuk membuat industri rekaman melepaskan hak para pemain untuk berbagi panggung, dan jutaan dolar yang dikumpulkan dari album dan film diikat di rekening penampungan pajak IRS selama bertahun-tahun,tetapi Konser untuk Bangladesh diakui sebagai proyek bantuan kemanusiaan yang sangat sukses dan berpengaruh, menghasilkan kesadaran dan dana yang cukup besar serta memberikan pelajaran dan inspirasi berharga untuk proyek-proyek berikutnya, seperti Live Aid.[3][4]
