Kuala Lumpur adalah ibukota negara Malaysia yang juga merupakan salah satu dari tiga Wilayah Persekutuan di Malaysia. Sejarah

Kuala Lumpur didirikan pada 1857 di sekitar Sungai Gombak dan Kelang. Pemukiman didirikan setelah Raja Abdullah dari Selangor memberi izin untuk penambangan timah. 87 orang penambang Tionghoa mulai membuka daerah Ampang dan walaupun 69 orang dari mereka terkena penyakit, penambangan yang berhasil tetap berjalan serta menarik pedagang dan akhirnya sebuah kota mulai berkembang.

Dalam perkembangannya, Inggris yang menguasai Malaya merasa perlu mengangkat pemimpin yang disebut Kapitan Cina untuk mengatur jalannya ketertiban dan administrasi. Kapitan Cina yang pertama adalah Hiu Siew sedangkan yang berhasil membangun Kuala Lumpur adalah yang ketiga, Yap Ah Loy. Pada 1957 setelah kemerdekaan Federasi Malaya, Kuala Lumpur dipilih menjadi ibukotanya begitu juga pada tahun 1963 setelah pembentukan Federasi Malaysia. Pada 1974, Kuala Lumpur terpisah dari Selangor dan menjadi Wilayah Persekutuan.

Sekarang, Kuala Lumpur menjadi sebuah kota modern yang dihiasi oleh berbagai pencakar langit seperti Menara Kembar Petronas dan Menara Kuala Lumpur.

Demografi

Menurut data tahun 2000, jumlah penduduk daerah metropolitan Kuala Lumpur berjumlah 1,5 juta jiwa dengan luas 243,65 km² namun apabila dihitung dengan daerah sekitarnya menjadi 4 juta jiwa.

Kuala Lumpur dilayani oleh Bandara Internasional Kuala Lumpur atau KLIA di Sepang yang juga terhubung dengan KLIA Ekspres. Berbagai layanan bus juga tersedia ke berbagai tempat di Malaysia dan ke Singapura.

Dalam Kota

Kuala Lumpur memiliki jaringan bus dan kereta ringan serta monorel. Jaringan kereta ringan atau LRT terdiri dari Sri Petaling Line, Ampang Line dan Kelana Jaya Line. Hub untuk layanan kereta tersedia di KL Sentral yang dibuka pada 2001.
