Kalimantan adalah sebuah pulau yang terletak di sebelah utara Pulau Jawa dan di sebelah Barat Pulau Sulawesi. Terbagi menjadi wilayah Brunei, Indonesia dan Malaysia.

Seringkali pulau ini secara keseluruhan disebut Borneo sedangkan wilayah Indonesia disebut Kalimantan, lalu wilayah Malaysia disebut Sarawak dan Sabah. Selain itu ada pula kesultanan Brunei. Pada zaman dahulu, Borneo adalah nama yang dipakai oleh kolonial Inggris dan Belanda, sedangkan nama pulau Kalimantan digunakan oleh penduduk Indonesia. Dalam bahasa Indonesia dahulu, Kalimantan Utara adalah sebutan untuk Borneo Utara (Sabah), tetapi dalam pengertian sekarang Kalimantan Utara adalah Kalimantan Timur bagian utara. Jadi dalam arti luas Kalimantan meliputi seluruh pulau Borneo, sedangkan dalam arti sempit Kalimantan hanya mengacu pada wilayah Indonesia.

Etimologi

  • Pertama. Borneo dari kata Kesultanan Brunei Darussalam yang sebelumnya merupakan kerajaan besar dan luas (mencakup Serawak dan sebagian Sabah karena sebagian Sabah ini milik kesultanan Sulu-Mindanao. Para pedagang Portugis menyebutnya Borneo dan digunakan oleh orang-orang Eropa. Namun penduduk asli menyebutnya sebagai pulo Klemantan.
  • Kedua. Menurut Crowfurd dalam Descriptive Dictionary of the Indian Island (1856), kata Kalimantan adalah nama sejenis mangga sehingga pulau Kalimantan adalah pulau mangga namun dia menambahkan bahwa kata itu berbau dongeng dan tidak populer.
  • Ketiga. Menurut Dr. B. Ch. Chhabra dalam jurnal M.B.R.A.S vol XV part 3 hlm 79 menyebutkan kebiasaan bangsa India kuno menyebutkan nama tempat sesuai hasil bumi seperti jewawut dalam bahasa sanksekerta yawa sehingga pulau itu disebut yawadwipa yang dikenal sebagai pulau Jawa sehingga berdasarkan analogi itu pulau itu yang dengan nama Sansekerta Amra-dwipa atau pulau mangga.
  • Keempat. Menurut dari C.Hose dan Mac Dougall menyebutkan bahwa kata Kalimantan berasal dari 6 golongan suku-suku setempat yakni Dayak Laut (Iban), Kayan, Kenya, Klemantan, Munut, dan Punan. Dalam karangannya, Natural Man, a Record from Borneo (1926), C Hose menjelaskan bahwa Klemantan adalah nama baru yang digunakan oleh bangsa Melayu.
  • Kelima. Menurut W.H Treacher dalam British Borneo dalam jurnal M.B.R.A.S (1889), mangga liar tidak dikenal di Kalimantan utara. Lagi pula Borneo tidak pernah dikenal sebagai pulau yang menghasilkan mangga malah mungkin sekali dari sebutan Sago Island (pulau Sagu) karena kata Lamantah adalah nama asli sagu mentah.
  • Keenam. Menurut Prof. Dr. Slamet Muljana dalam bukunya Sriwijaya (LKIS 2006), kata Kalimantan bukan kata melayu asli tapi kata pinjaman sebagai halnya kata malaya, melayu yang berasal dari India (malaya yang berarti gunung). Kalimantan atau Klemantan berasal dari Sanksekerta, Kalamanthana yaitu pulau yang udaranya sangat panas atau membakar (kal[a]: musim, waktu dan manthan[a]: membakar). Karena vokal a pada kala dan manthana menurut kebiasaan tidak diucapkan, maka Kalamanthana diucap Kalmantan yang kemudian disebut penduduk asli Klemantan atau Quallamontan yang akhirnya diturunkan menjadi Kalimantan.

Sejarah awal

Pulau Kalimantan berada di tengah-tengah Asia Tenggara karena itu pulau ini banyak mendapat pengaruh budaya dan politik dari pulau-pulau sekitarnya. Sekitar tahun 400 pulau Kalimantan telah memasuki zaman sejarah dengan ditemukan prasasti Yupa peninggalan Kerajaan Kutai tetapi perkembangan kemajuan peradaban relatif lebih lambat dibandingkan pulau lain karena kendala geografis dan penduduk yang sedikit.

Sekitar tahun 1362 Majapahit dibawah pimpinan Patih Gajah Mada melakukan perluasan kekuasaannya ke pulau Kalimantan, yaitu negeri-negeri : Kapuas-Katingan, Sampit, Kota Ungga, Kota Waringin, Sambas, Lawai, Kadandangan, Landa, Samadang, Tirem, Sedu, Barune, Kalka, Saludung, Solot, Pasir, Barito, Sawaku, Tabalong, Tanjung Kutei dan Malano tetap yang terpenting di pulau Tanjungpura.

Di zaman Hindia-Belanda, Kalimantan dikenal sebagai Borneo. Ini tidak berarti nama Kalimantan tidak dikenal. Dalam surat-surat Pangeran Tamjidillah dari Kerajaan Banjar pada tahun 1857 kepada pihak Residen Belanda di Banjarmasin ia menyebutkan pulau Kalimantan, tidak pulau Borneo. Ini menunjukkan bahwa di kalangan penduduk, nama Kalimantan lebih dikenal dari pada nama Borneo yang dipakai dalam administrasi pemerintahan kolonial Hindia Belanda. Nama Kalimantan kembali mulai populer pada sekitar tahun 1940-an.

Masa Republik Indonesia Serikat

Setelah mengambil alih Kalimantan dari tangan Jepang, NICA mendesak kaum Federal Kalimantan untuk segera mendirikan Negara Kalimantan menyusul Negara Indonesia Timur yang telah berdiri. Maka dibentuklah Dewan Kalimantan Barat tanggal 28 Oktober 1946, yang menjadi Daerah Istimewa Kalimantan Barat pada tanggal 27 Mei 1947; dengan Kepala Daerah, Sultan Hamid II dari Kesultanan Pontianak dengan pangkat Mayor Jenderal. Wilayahnya terdiri atas 13 kerajaan sebagai swapraja seperti pada jaman Hindia Belanda yaitu Sambas, Pontianak, Mempawah, Landak, Kubu, Tayan, Meliau, Sekadau, Sintang, Selimbau, Simpang, Sukadana dan Matan.

Dewan Dayak Besar dibentuk tanggal 7 Desember 1946, dan selanjutnya tanggal 8 Januari 1947 dibentuk Dewan Pagatan, Dewan Pulau Laut dan Dewan Cantung Sampanahan yang bergabung menjadi Federasi Kalimantan Tenggara. Kemudian tanggal 18 Februari 1947 dibentuk Dewan Pasir dan Federasi Kalimantan Timur, yang akhirnya pada tanggal 26 Agustus 1947 bergabung menjadi Dewan Kalimantan Timur. Selanjutnya Daerah Kalimantan Timur menjadi Daerah Istimewa Kalimantan Timur dengan Kepala Daerah, Aji Sultan Parikesit dari Kesultanan Kutai dengan pangkat Kolonel. Daerah Banjar yang sudah terjepit daerah federal akhirnya dibentuk Dewan Banjar tanggal 14 Januari 1948.

Gubernur Kalimantan dalam pemerintahan Pemerintah RI di Yogyakarta, yaitu Pangeran Muhammad Noor, mengirim Cilik Riwut dan Hasan Basry dalam misi perjuangan mempertahankan kemerdekaan untuk menghadapi kekuatan NICA. Pada tanggal 17 Mei 1949, Letkol Hasan Basry selaku Gubernur Tentara ALRI Wilayah IV Pertahanan Kalimantan memproklamirkan sebuah Proklamasi Kalimantan yang isinya bahwa "Daerah Kalimantan Selatan" (daerah-daerah di luar Daerah Istimewa Kalimantan Barat dan Daerah Istimewa Kalimantan Timur) tetap sebagai bagian tak terpisahkan dari Negara Republik Indonesia yang telah diproklamasikan tanggal 17 Agustus 1945. Pemerintah Gubernur Militer ini merupakan upaya tandingan terhadap terbentuknya Dewan Banjar yang didirikan Belanda.

Di masa Republik Indonesia Serikat, Kalimantan menjadi beberapa daerah yaitu :

  1. Daerah Istimewa Kalimantan Barat
  2. Daerah Istimewa Kalimantan Timur
  3. Dayak Besar
  4. Daerah Banjar
  5. Federasi Kalimantan Tenggara

Sejak tahun 1938, Borneo-Hindia Belanda (Kalimantan) merupakan satu kesatuan daerah administratif di bawah seorang gubernur, yang berkedudukan di Banjarmasin, dan memiliki wakil di Volksrad. Wakil Kalimantan di Volksrad :

  1. Pangeran Muhammad Ali (sebelum 1935) digantikan anaknya,
  2. Pangeran Muhammad Noor (1935-1939) digantikan oleh,
  3. Mr. Tadjuddin Noor (1939-1945)

  1. Dr. A. Haga (1938-1942), gubernur dari Kegubernuran Borneo berkedudukan di Banjarmasin
  2. Pangeran Musa Ardi Kesuma (1942-1945), Ridzie Kalimantan Selatan dan Tengah
  3. Ir. Pangeran Muhammad Noor (2 September 1945), gubernur Kalimantan berkedudukan di Yogyakarta
  4. dr. Moerjani (14 Agustus 1950), gubernur Kalimantan berkedudukan di Banjarmasin
  5. Mas Subarjo (1953-1955), gubernur Kalimantan berkedudukan di Banjarmasin
  6. Raden Tumenggung Arya Milono (1955-1957), gubernur Kalimantan berkedudukan di Banjarmasin.

Pembentukan kembali provinsi Kalimantan tanggal 14 Agustus 1950 sesudah bubarnya RIS, diperingati sebagai Hari Jadi Provinsi Kalimantan Selatan (dahulu bernama provinsi Kalimantan, salah satu provinsi pertama). Tahun 1957 Kalimantan dibagi menjadi 3 provinsi, yaitu Kalimantan Selatan, Kalimantan Timur, Kalimantan Barat. Selanjutnya tahun 1958, terbentuklah propinsi Kalimantan Tengah sebagai pemekaran dari Kalimantan Selatan.

Konfrontasi Indonesia-Malaysia

Kalimantan merupakan lokasi utama dalam peristiwa Konfrontasi antara Indonesia dan Malaysia pada tahun 1962 dan 1966.

Pulau Kalimantan terletak di sebelah utara pulau Jawa, sebelah timur Selat Melaka, sebelah barat pulau Sulawesi dan sebelah selatan Filipina. Luas pulau Kalimantan adalah 743.330 km².

Pulau Kalimantan dikelilingi oleh Laut Cina Selatan di bagian barat dan utara-barat, Laut Sulu di utara-timur, Laut Sulawesi dan Selat Makassar di timur serta Laut Jawa dan Selat Karimata di bagian selatan.

Gunung Kinabalu (4095 m) yang terletak di Sabah, Malaysia ialah lokasi tertinggi di Kalimantan.

Sungai-sungai terpanjang di Kalimantan adalah Sungai Kapuas (1143 km) di Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia, Sungai Barito (880 km) di Kalimantan Selatan, Indonesia, Sungai Mahakam (980 km) di Kalimantan Timur, Indonesia, Sungai Rajang (562,5 km) di Serawak, Malaysia.

Sumber daya alam

Kalimantan memiliki hutan yang lebat. Namun, wilayah hutan itu semakin berkurang akibat maraknya aksi penebangan pohon.

Hutan Kalimantan ialah habitat alami bagi hewan orang utan, gajah borneo, badak borneo dan beberapa spesies yang terancam punah.
